Mammotion is built upon the self-driving robotics solution from AgileX Robotics and is a part of the Songling Robot Shenzen Limited Company based in Shenzen, China. The Songling Robot Shenzen Limited Company is responsible for developing many different types of robots, including the newly launched LUBA robot mower. Special Features The reason for this is that it’s so robust and well-equipped. For example, the AWD in its name stands for all wheel drive which improves traction on slopes. Couple that with the amazingly solid rubber tyres and excellent suspension and it’s not hard to see why this is a real workhorse on hills. Cutting Heights I also had an issue a couple of times where Luba would say it is disconnected from my WiFi, but will show as connected – I’ve then had to manually disconnect from my network, power-cycle Luba, and reconnect manually After hearing a bit more about the Luba AWD from Jeff, I was excited to test it out. Mammotion Luba AWD 5000 specs The next step is to then configure the Luba AWD 5000 to your lawn. This can be done within the app where you can set up to 10 mowing zones. This is about as much work as you’ll ever have to do with the Luba AWD 5000, as it involves manually driving the machine around the lawn to create the mowing area. This is all done from within the app and let’s face it, it’s kind of fun as it’s just like playing with a remote control car!

One other slight issue, it felt a bit unclear with the app how to add/manage multiple zones, I had to tinker with it a bit before sorting it out. More on that below. Currently there are 3 Luba mower models: Luba AWD 5000, Luba AWD 3000, and Luba AWD 1000. The 3000 and 1000 models are designed for smaller yards and carry a smaller price tag. The AWD 3000 was recently redesigned to include omni directional wheels, which allows it turn much easier and lowers the chance of it damaging your lawn. Here’s a comparison of the 3 models. Something that is seen on a lot of robotic lawn mowers is a lift sensor and it’s not missing on the Luba AWD 5000. It’s a simple feature but one that goes a long way in preventing injuries if you have a curious child, for example. If this wasn’t enough you can schedule the Luba to cut each zone at different heights, speeds and patterns! Navigation System When the Luba AWD 5000 initially starts mowing, it will focus on the middle portion of the lawn. Once it has completed this, it’ll then go around the perimeter three times to ensure that the grass here is even and neat. A lot of robot mowers don’t cut to the edge, so this is a really nice touch that’ll save you having to get the trimmers out. Plus, it does a really good job of getting right up to the grass line. Rain SensorIn days gone by, robotic lawn mowers relied on a perimeter wire to prevent them from leaving the desired area. There have since been robot mowers that are equipped with cameras and, as long as you have a well defined lawn, they’ll stay where you want them to be. With a perimeter wire, firstly, someone has to install it – this means extra time if you do it yourself, or extra cost if someone else does it. Secondly, the perimeter wire can be damaged by animals or someone putting a spade through it - a break in the perimeter wire can be frustrating.Thirdly, if you want to change the area to be mowed, it means re-laying the wire. Finally, if you decide to move, you need to re-laying again the wire in your new lawn. Doesn’t have cellular connectivity so if it’s out of range of your WiFi, you won’t get the latest notifications, status, etc. (Luba does have a SIM slot, but the capability isn’t live for now) The Mammotion app could use some work: It’s not as intuitive as I’d hoped for things like adding multiple zones, saving/editing zones, and more

Once the setup is complete, you are good to go and will never have to worry about mowing the lawn ever again. What’s more you will have a well maintained and healthy lawn, due to the mulching process, at all times – happy days! Mowing Features The main benefit of robot mowers is that they will mow your lawn more often than you would and keep the grass perfectly mowed all year round. I found the Luba AWD 5000 to be an incredibly high tech and well designed piece of equipment that’s so easy to use. If you like the idea of having something top of the range without needing a degree in software engineering or robotics, then this is going to be right up your street.
